A letter to Senator Feinstein in support of the Employee Free Choice Act

Senator Dianne Feinstein
United States Senate
331 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

November 1, 2009

Dear Senator Feinstein:

The October 28th meeting of the Democrats of Napa Valley club was devoted to the topic of organized labor and the natural alliance between our Democratic Party values and the goals of the labor movement. Presenters at the meeting included local representatives from the United Farm Workers in the Napa and Sonoma winegrowing regions, the California Teachers Association, and the president of the Napa-Solano Central Labor Council.

As an organization of devoted, grassroots Democratic activists we are resolved to support labor's mission of protecting the rights and gains of working families both locally and nationally. This includes efforts to identify and promote local agricultural businesses that produce under UFW contracts, partnering more closely with our central labor council on get-out-the-vote efforts, and encouraging our national and local elected officials to support initiatives that will improve the lives of working families.

Since you are both our Senator and a prominent member of the Democratic Party, we are concerned about your reluctance to co-sponsor the Employee Free Choice Act, especially when research by the AFL-CIO shows that workers represented by a union are 52% more likely to have job-provided healthcare, earn 28% more than their nonunion counterparts, and are three times as likely to enjoy the retirement security of a good pension. An estimated 60 million American workers would be interested in joining a union if they felt they could do so without being subject to obstruction, intimidation and other unfair labor practices from their employers.

The Employee Free Choice Act will empower workers who choose to exercise their democratic right to form a union, and will lessen the opportunities for employers to disrupt that process.

We, the Democrats of Napa Valley, believe that the Employee Free Choice Act will be good for America and California, and will restore economic dignity and security to America's working families. We strongly urge you to reconsider your position and lend your support to the Employee Free Choice Act.
