Mainstreet Moms are part of growing trend of Do It Yourself political activism, aimed at redefeating George W. Bush

(PRWEB) June 30, 2004 -- They don't look like wild-eyed left-wing activists. They are parents on line at the supermarket. They are retirees and singletons and golfers with American flag pins in their lapels. The new grassroots landscape is uniform only in their do-it-yourself creative approach to beating George W. Bush, as step one in getting the country they love back on track.

In Sonoma, CA, epicenter of the wine country good life, residents Hunt Sharp and Michelle Skaff were so empowered by the success of their MoveOn.org Bake Sale for Democracy, that they rounded up enough neighbors to continue selling cupcakes all summer. Half a block up the Plaza, another local bunch meets in the snuggery of Murphy's Pub to fundraise for John Kerry -- independent of his official campaign.

Wanting to do more, both groups ask their local MMOBster for ways to reach out to states more in play this election than California. Mainstreet Moms Oppose Bush (The MMOB) is an all-volunteer organization inspired by Howard Dean and dedicated to registering single moms in battleground states. Through "Adopt-a-Swing-State" letter writing parties, thousands of personal notes and voter registration forms are being sent to women that did not vote in the 2000 presidential election.

In an open source tradition, and like the way the best political blogs cross-pollinate posts, The MMOB is part of a family of activist start-ups created to GOTV in the swing states. Megan Matson, founder of The MMOB, says, "We just sent 4,637 Nevada names straight to a group in Nevada who is doing under 35 singles." She counts more than 22,000 names sent out since launch on May 1st to over 660 members and party Hosts. Each party ripples out to generate new ones; more work for Megan, but it is all good. She still finds time to build a VOTE Float for the local Fourth of July Parade.

Mainstreet Moms Oppose Bush is a national, grassroots, get-out-the-vote initiative. Inspired by Howard Dean's campaign, Megan Matson, a California mother of three pre-schoolers, decided she had the power to reach out to the millions of women that did not vote in the 2000 presidential election. She founded The MMOB and created nationwide Adopt-A-Swing-State letter writing parties being held every month until November. Concerned mothers, sons, daughters and dads have joined The MMOB to send personal notes to single moms in key states reminding them how much their vote matters.

The MMOB is a Political Action Committee (section 527) and is registered with the Federal Election Commission. The MMOB is not authorized by any Candidate or Candidate's Committee.
